Common heat treatment processes for steel after quenching

Heat treatment process for quenching

Quenching is a heat treatment method that heats steel to a certain temperature and then cools it rapidly to improve the hardness and strength of the steel. Common quenching methods include water quenching, oil quenching, salt quenching, etc. Among them, water quenching has the fastest cooling rate and is generally suitable for steel with higher hardness requirements, while oil quenching and salt quenching have relatively slow cooling rates and are suitable for steel with higher mechanical properties and plasticity requirements.

Treatment after quenching

Although quenching can improve the hardness and strength of steel, it will also produce a certain degree of brittleness. Therefore, in order to adapt to applications in different fields, it is necessary to perform appropriate tempering and quenching + tempering on the quenched steel.

Tempering refers to heating the quenched steel to a certain temperature and keeping it warm for a period of time to slow down the hardness. The intergranular gaps generated in this process disappear, thereby improving the plasticity and toughness of the steel. The tempering temperature is usually 200℃~600℃, which can be adjusted according to the requirements and performance of the steel.

Quenching + tempering is to heat treat the quenched steel twice, first quenching and then tempering, to achieve the dual effects of quenching and tempering. Usually the temperature after quenching is kept below room temperature, and then tempering is performed.

Of course, quenching is a commonly used heat treatment method for steel, but the quenched steel is prone to certain brittleness, so appropriate tempering and quenching + tempering are required. These heat treatment processes can effectively improve the plasticity, toughness and mechanical properties of steel, making it more suitable for applications in different fields.
