What is the difference between die cast and sand cast aluminum

The main differences between die cast aluminum and sand cast aluminum are in production process, cost, quality and application scenarios.

Production process

Die cast aluminum: Die cast aluminum is to inject liquid metal into the mold under high pressure, and use the high pressure and high speed filling capacity of the mold to solidify the metal under pressure. This process can produce castings with high dimensional accuracy and good surface finish, and has high production efficiency and is suitable for large-scale production.
Sand cast aluminum: Sand cast aluminum pours molten metal into the sand mold and fills the mold by gravity. Due to the low pressure of the molten metal, it is easy to produce defects such as underfilling and cold shut, resulting in the casting quality being inferior to die cast aluminum.

Cost and quality

Die cast aluminum: The mold is complex to make and the cost is high, but the production efficiency is high and it is suitable for large-scale production. Die cast aluminum parts have better dimensional accuracy and surface finish than sand cast aluminum, and have higher strength and hardness, and usually require no or only a small amount of subsequent processing.
Sand-cast aluminum: The mold making is relatively simple and the cost is low, but the production efficiency is low, and the casting quality is not as good as die-cast aluminum. The surface of sand-cast aluminum is rough and requires more subsequent processing.

Application scenarios

Die-cast aluminum: Due to its high precision, high strength and good surface quality, die-cast aluminum is widely used in automobiles, electronics, home appliances and other fields, especially parts that require high precision and complex shapes.
Sand-cast aluminum: Due to its low cost and suitability for small batch production, sand-cast aluminum is often used in some cost-sensitive and non-high-precision application scenarios.
Of course, the production efficiency of die-cast aluminum is higher, and hundreds of aluminum parts can be manufactured in each production cycle. Cast aluminum has a lower production efficiency, and can only produce dozens to hundreds of aluminum parts in each cycle. This is because the production process of die-cast aluminum is highly automated, and each production cycle can quickly complete multiple mold opening and closing, injection, cooling and other steps; while cast aluminum needs to wait for the aluminum alloy to completely solidify before it can be taken out of the mold, and the production efficiency is relatively low.
Therefore, the manufacturing process, surface treatment, material and production efficiency of die-cast aluminum and cast aluminum are different. Therefore, for different application scenarios, it is necessary to select the appropriate aluminum alloy material.
