In the field of metal casting, steel, iron and aluminum are used very frequently, covering almost all industry fields.
For steel, manganese steel is a representative material. First of all, the maximum hardness of manganese steel is 550bhn, which is equivalent to 52HRC. Iron is generally 5–10HRC. Therefore, the hardness of manganese steel knives is much stronger than that of iron knives and ordinary steel knives.
Manganese steel is a kind of wear-resistant steel specially provided for heavy industry. Its application fields include quarrying, mining, excavation, coal industry, casting and steel industry.
After anti-wear technology treatment, the surface of the material can reach 500–550 Brinell hardness, continue to maintain internal flexibility, minimize surface friction, can be welded with high manganese steel or similar materials, can be cut by acetylene oxygen torch, non-magnetic, etc.
Steel with a manganese content of 11% to 18% is called high manganese steel. The chemical composition of the commonly used cast high manganese steel ZMn13 is: Mn content is 11%~14%, C content is 1%~1.4%, Si content is 0.3%~1%, P content is less than 0.03%, and S content is less than 0.05%.
Taking Mn13 high manganese steel as an example, its hardness characteristics are as follows:
Hardness under normal conditions: Under normal conditions, the hardness of Mn13 high manganese steel is about 180~220HB.
Changes in hardness when impacted: When Mn13 high manganese steel is impacted or subjected to high pressure, its surface layer will undergo strong work hardening, and the hardness will rapidly increase to 450~550HB, or even higher. This “more impact, more wear resistance” characteristic makes Mn13 high manganese steel have excellent wear resistance in high impact wear environments such as ball mills.
Factors affecting the hardness of cast manganese steel
Chemical composition: Manganese content is one of the key factors that determine the performance of Mn13 high manganese steel. The increase in manganese content can improve the work hardening ability and wear resistance of steel.
Heat treatment process: Reasonable heat treatment process can further refine the grains and improve the hardness. For example, Mn13 high manganese steel after water toughening has high plasticity and toughness, but low hardness. Through reasonable heat treatment process, its hardness can be significantly improved.
Use conditions: In high impact and high wear environment, the hardness of Mn13 high manganese steel will be significantly improved.
Comparison of hardness of different types of cast manganese steel
Take ZG110Mn13Mo1 as an example, its hardness ≥200HB (Brinell hardness). The hardness of 65Mn steel plate after heat treatment can reach HRC60 or above, and the hardness after quenching is generally around HRC62.
