The manufacturing process for turbine shafts primarily includes the following steps,Turbine shafts typically require forging.
The following is a detailed analysis:
Forging is essential in turbine shaft manufacturing. Two methods, die forging and ring forging, are commonly used to produce turbine shafts or bearing-related metal parts. Only after the rough bearing components are forged can other processes, such as machining or CNC machining, be performed.
Die forging: Suitable for mass production of engine discs (such as turbine shaft discs), using die forming to ensure dimensional accuracy.
Ring forging: Suitable for ring forgings (such as turbine bearings), offering higher material utilization and the ability to process complex shapes.
As a core engine component, turbine shafts must withstand high temperatures, high rotation speeds, and complex stress environments, placing extremely high demands on material properties. Forging optimizes the metal’s microstructure, eliminates defects such as pores and shrinkage, and ensures fiber continuity, thereby improving mechanical properties and service life.
Remaining Manufacturing Processes
Welding and Assembly: Friction welding is used to integrate the turbine blades and shaft to form the rotor assembly.
Heat Treatment: High-temperature tempering eliminates welding stresses and ensures structural stability. Machining:
The shaft is turned to the specified length and the center hole is drilled;
The outer diameter and R-grooves are rough-turned to size;
The outer diameter of each gear is fine-turned to precise dimensions and dynamically balanced.
Surface Treatment:
Grinding of the turbine outer diameter and end faces;
Thread rolling;
Penetrant testing to ensure the absence of pores or cracks.
High-Frequency Quenching: High-frequency induction heating is applied to key areas to improve surface hardness and wear resistance.
Core Process Features
Single-Crystal Blade Manufacturing: High-pressure turbine shaft blades are cast through complex internal cooling channels using a wax mold and ceramic core combination to ensure that the crystal growth direction aligns with the direction of force (the error must be controlled within ±10°).
Dynamic Balancing: Dynamic balancing of the rotor assembly is tested using a dynamic balancing tester to prevent excessive vibration during high-speed operation.
