6061 cast aluminum has good corrosion resistance among medium-strength aluminum alloys and is widely used.
It is the main metal material for die casting in the industry.
Comprehensive analysis of the corrosion resistance of 6061 cast aluminum
1. Basic corrosion resistance characteristics
As a representative of Al-Mg-Si alloys, the corrosion resistance of 6061 cast aluminum mainly comes from the alloying effect of magnesium (0.8%-1.2%) and silicon (0.4%-0.8%), forming a dense natural oxide film. Specific performance includes:
Environmental adaptability: Excellent performance in most environments (including industrial atmosphere and fresh water), especially in corrosive environments such as seawater. The corrosion resistance is outstanding, and the corrosion depth of the salt spray test (1000 hours) is ≤0.05mm.
Oxide film characteristics: Without surface treatment, the oxide film can provide basic protection; after anodizing (film thickness ≥10μm), the corrosion resistance is significantly improved, and it can pass the 48-120 hour salt spray test (ASTM B117 standard).
Defect sensitivity: The casting process may cause pores or shrinkage, and heat treatment (such as T6 state) is required to reduce the impact of internal defects on corrosion resistance.
Actual application cases and test data
New energy vehicles: used for battery trays, the life is extended by more than 20% through protective design, and the salt spray test is >1000 hours.
Aerospace: The oxide film thickness is 15μm, and the UV aging resistance exceeds 5000 hours; the fuselage frame of a domestic passenger aircraft uses 6061 thick plate, which meets the fire protection standard FAR25.853.
Shipbuilding industry: Marine aluminum tubes can resist seawater corrosion and reduce maintenance costs by 15% compared to steel structures.
Corrosion test:
Unprotected state: pitting occurs in 24 hours, and obvious white rust (oxidation product) is generated in 96 hours.
After anodizing: Salt spray test >1000 hours when the film thickness is 20μm, and the impact resistance of electrophoretic coating reaches 50kg・cm.
Therefore, 6061 cast aluminum has excellent corrosion resistance among medium-strength aluminum alloys, and is particularly suitable for the marine, automotive and aviation fields, but it needs to be combined with surface treatment processes to cope with extreme environments.
