Tungsten steel (hard alloy) is mainly characterized by its high density,
extremely high hardness, extreme brittleness, weak magnetism or non-magnetism, and rust resistance. However, specific types may vary in their characteristics. Simple methods can be used for preliminary identification in daily life.
How to Easily Identify:
Weight: Significantly heavier for the same volume, with a density of approximately 13-15 g/cm³, almost twice as heavy as ordinary steel (approximately 7.85 g/cm³).
Hardness Test: Almost impossible to scratch with a hard object; Mohs hardness 8.9-9.1; ordinary knives will hardly leave a mark.
Magnetic Test: Most tungsten steel is weakly magnetic or non-magnetic; magnets have very weak attraction or may not even attract it (but those containing a cobalt binder phase may have weak magnetism).
Sound/Fracture: A crisp sound when tapped; brittle; easily breaks when hammered; the fracture surface has a fine, granular luster.
Appearance: Grayish-black with a special metallic luster; high-quality tungsten steel has a bright, mirror-like surface and does not rust.
Different types have different parameters: YG and YT grades, for example, do not have exactly the same density and magnetic properties.
Counterfeit products may use ordinary steel to imitate: Some “tungsten steel” is actually high-speed steel or carbon steel, which can be easily identified by polishing.
Accurate identification requires professional equipment: chemical composition analysis, metallographic analysis, and spectroscopy are more accurate.
