The main differences between ductile iron pipes and ordinary cast iron pipes lie in their materials and performance.
Ductile iron pipes are made of ductile iron, which is second only to steel in hardness. The graphite inside is spherical, hence the name. Gray cast iron, on the other hand, has flake-shaped graphite inside. Produced through a special casting process, they offer excellent properties such as high strength, high elongation, corrosion resistance, and wear resistance. Ordinary cast iron pipes, on the other hand, are made of gray cast iron, which has lower strength, poor elongation, and is susceptible to corrosion and wear.

Cast iron pipes are primarily composed of cast iron, whose primary components are carbon, silicon, manganese, sulfur, and phosphorus. While cast iron pipes are harder, they are prone to cracking, are brittle, and lack corrosion resistance.
The primary raw material for ductile iron pipes is ductile iron, an alloy cast iron with elements such as magnesium added to it. Ductile iron pipes are softer, have good toughness and plasticity, and exhibit good corrosion resistance. Ductile iron pipes excel in the following aspects:
1. Higher Strength: Ductile iron pipes are over 30% stronger than ordinary cast iron pipes, capable of withstanding greater pressure and weight, making them safer and more reliable.
2. Better Elongation: Ductile iron pipes have an elongation more than double that of ordinary cast iron pipes, allowing them to better adapt to soil movement and deformation, reducing the risk of leaks and breakage.
3. Corrosion and Abrasion Resistance: Ductile iron pipes offer excellent corrosion and abrasion resistance, allowing them to withstand long-term use in harsh environments without damage.
4. Easier Installation: Ductile iron pipes have thinner walls and are lightweight, requiring no special equipment or tools for installation, saving both cost and time.
Of course, while both cast iron pipes and ductile iron pipes are cast pipes, there are significant differences in material, manufacturing process, performance, and other aspects. Cast iron pipes are known for their high hardness and poor corrosion resistance, making them suitable for low-pressure, low-temperature transportation. Ductile iron pipes, on the other hand, offer excellent toughness, strength, and corrosion resistance, making them suitable for water and gas transportation, as well as pressure equipment.
