Inconel 718 Casting Properties

Inconel 718 alloy is a precipitation-hardening nickel-chromium-iron alloy containing niobium and molybdenum.

It can be supplied in either the solution-treated or precipitation-hardened state. Its primary composition is nickel, chromium, and iron, with additional elements such as niobium and molybdenum. It exhibits stable chemical properties and oxidation resistance from -250°C to 1000°C, maintaining high strength, corrosion resistance, and toughness at 700°C. The casting properties of Inconel 718 alloy are primarily reflected in its heat treatment process and microstructure control, as follows:

Casting Process

Hot Working Window: The optimal forging temperature is 1120°C, with a temperature range of 950-1150°C.

Cold Working: An 80% reduction of area can be achieved, requiring an intermediate annealing treatment (950°C/1 hour).

Welding Properties: With a sensitivity coefficient of P = 32%, heat input must be controlled to <1.5 kJ/mm, making it suitable for processes such as argon arc welding. Microstructure Control
Reinforcement Phase System: Contains γ” phase (Ni₃Nb) and γ’ phase (Ni₃(Ti,Al)), which precipitates through aging treatment to enhance high-temperature strength.

Grain Refinement: ASTM Grade 5-8 fine-grain strengthening, increasing high-temperature endurance life by three times.
Phase Transformation Temperature: γ” phase dissolution temperature ≈ 930°C, γ’ phase dissolution temperature ≈ 850°C.

Typical Applications

Aerospace Engines: High-pressure turbine disks withstand centrifugal loads exceeding 600°C, and combustion chamber components utilize laser drilling.
Aerospace Equipment: Rocket engine nozzles withstand transient temperatures of 3000°C, and thin-walled ducts for satellite propulsion systems have a minimum wall thickness of 0.2mm.
This alloy combines excellent casting fluidity and structural stability, making it suitable for the precision molding of complex, high-temperature components.

Of course, the “718” designation of Inconel 718 stems from its unique molybdate composition. The nickel-chromium skeleton resists high-temperature corrosion, while the niobium, titanium, and molybdenum synergistically enhance rigidity and creep resistance, contributing to its exceptional durability in the extreme environments of aerospace turbine engines.
