What is forging
Forging is the process of shaping solid metal using compressive forces. It is usually done when the metal is very hot (such as 1000 degrees Celsius) because the force required to shape the metal is much lower than when trying to forge at an intermediate “warm” temperature or “cold” forging at room temperature.
The size of the forge itself can vary greatly, from the largest units with a load impact capacity equivalent to > 50,000T, to units that forge small individual parts in one go.
The forge is equipped with tools to transfer loads and help shape the metal. Hammer forging uses a simple-shaped tool to “strike” the metal and relies on the longitudinal metal workpiece to achieve the desired shape. Die forging uses forming tools to achieve a specific cross-section, such as a car swing arm, which is a die-forged product.
