Precision Level of Lost-Wa Casting

The precision level of lost-wax casting (investment casting) is relatively high among conventional casting processes.

It allows for minimal or even no machining, significantly reducing subsequent machining workload.

I. Dimensional Tolerance Accuracy The international standard follows ISO 8062, and the equivalent domestic standard is GB/T 6414. Its tolerance grades typically reach CT4-6, far exceeding the CT10-13 grades of sand casting and approaching the CT5-7 grades of die casting.

Reference dimensional tolerances: Approximately ±0.13mm for 20mm dimensions, ±0.30mm for 100mm dimensions, and ±0.43mm for 200mm dimensions. For small parts, accuracy within ±0.10mm is often difficult to achieve.

II. Surface and Detail Precision The high surface finish of the castings allows for clear replication of the fine engravings on the wax model, enabling the complete forming of complex shapes such as openwork and pierced carving. For example, the “Mountain Ghost” coin produced using the traditional lost-wax casting method exhibits clear and sharp engraving details, with excellent precision even in the gaps.

Modern improved lost-wax casting methods are suitable for the production of high-precision components such as aero-engine blades and precision instrument parts, enabling the precision forming of complex high-temperature resistant castings that are difficult to achieve with other conventional casting processes.

III. Factors Affecting Precision Factors such as wax model shrinkage, linear changes during shell heating and cooling, alloy solidification shrinkage, and casting cooling deformation during the process can affect the consistency of the final dimensional accuracy. Using medium-to-high temperature wax materials can significantly improve the dimensional consistency of the castings.

Of course, this is now the mainstream production process for precision castings and is a global consensus.
