Shell molding and sand casting are two different casting processes,
mainly differing in mold type and process characteristics:
Shell Molding
Mold Type: Uses a thin-shell mold made of molding sand and thermosetting resin, formed by heating the mold.
Process Characteristics:
High Precision: Dimensional accuracy and surface finish of castings are superior to traditional sand casting; suitable for complex thin-walled parts.
High Efficiency: Fast production process, small footprint, suitable for mass production.
Environmental Impact: Less dust and noise pollution.
Applications: Precision components such as bearings, pump bodies, and engine blocks; widely used in automobiles, industrial equipment, etc.
Sand Casting
Mold Type: Uses sand as the main raw material, forming cavities through a molding process.
Process Characteristics:
Low Cost: Widely available materials; suitable for large-size castings.
High Adaptability: Can produce complex internal cavity structures, but dimensional accuracy and surface quality are relatively lower.
Wide Applications: Commonly used for key automotive components such as engine cylinder blocks and crankshafts. Of course, the choice between the two processes needs to be comprehensively considered based on product precision, production scale, and material characteristics. Generally, a professional foundry will provide you with suitable advice. Don’t worry about that. If you have a large-scale demand for custom castings, you can choose to cooperate with Mulan Metal. Mulan Metal has 12 years of experience in custom casting production and has helped clients in more than 30 countries complete various custom casting commissions, receiving consistent praise. We look forward to your consultation.
