The main differences between 5-axis and 4-axis machining are the number and configuration of axes, machining capacity, machining accuracy, programming difficulty, applicable fields and costs.
Number and configuration of axes
4-axis machining center: On the basis of three axes (X, Y, Z), a rotation axis is added, usually A axis (rotation around X axis), B axis (rotation around Y axis) or C axis (rotation around Z axis). This allows the workpiece to rotate 360 degrees on the horizontal plane.
5-axis machining center: On the basis of 4 axes, another rotation axis is added, usually W axis (rotation around X axis) or B axis (rotation around Y axis), so that the tool or workpiece can rotate 360 degrees on the vertical plane. 5-axis machining centers usually have A axis and C axis (or B axis and C axis), which represent the rotation of the tool around X axis and Z axis respectively.

Machining capacity
4-axis machining center: Suitable for flat parts, box parts, etc., can realize multi-faceted machining, reduce the number of clamping times, and improve machining efficiency. But there are still certain limitations when processing complex surfaces.
5-axis machining center: suitable for parts with complex three-dimensional surfaces, multi-station pores and high-precision requirements, especially parts with strict shape processing accuracy requirements. 5-axis machining center can process in any direction to achieve high-precision complex surface processing.
Processing accuracy
4-axis machining center: Although it has high processing accuracy, it may be subject to certain restrictions when processing complex surfaces.
5-axis machining center: Since the tool can rotate in any direction and is not restricted by the rotating plane, it has higher processing accuracy when processing complex surfaces.
Programming difficulty
4-axis machining center: Due to the relatively small number of axes, the programming difficulty is relatively low, which is suitable for small and medium-sized enterprises or users with limited budgets.
5-axis machining center: The programming difficulty is relatively high, and more programming skills and knowledge are required. It is suitable for high-end manufacturing fields such as aerospace, automobile manufacturing, etc.
Applicable fields and costs
4-axis machining center: Suitable for simple plane processing tasks or multi-faceted workpieces, the cost is relatively low, and it is suitable for small and medium-sized enterprises.
5-axis machining center: widely used in high-end manufacturing fields such as aerospace, automobile manufacturing, and medical equipment. Although the cost is relatively high, it can greatly improve machining efficiency and machining accuracy, bringing higher economic benefits.
Of course, the mainstream on the market is still 4-axis. Because in terms of cost and machining accuracy, 4-axis can already meet 90% of the current CNC machining needs.
