The difference between forging and quenching

Forging

Forging is a processing method that changes the shape and properties of metal by hammering or pressing after heating it. Forging can be divided into different methods such as manual forging, mechanical hammer forging and pressure forming forging. The metal becomes soft after heating, gradually deforms during hammering or pressing, and finally forms the desired shape. Forging can increase the material properties of the metal such as strength, hardness and toughness, and at the same time improve the heat resistance and corrosion resistance of the metal.

Quenching

Quenching is a processing method that changes the properties of the metal by causing phase change through rapid cooling. Quenching is mainly a treatment for steel. By allowing the steel heated to a certain temperature to cool rapidly, it produces a martensitic phase change, thereby improving the strength and hardness of the steel. The quenching process includes three steps: heating, heat preservation and cooling. Specifically, the purpose of heating is to heat the steel to the corresponding temperature to achieve good plasticity, the purpose of heat preservation is to ensure that the temperature lasts for a period of time, and the purpose of cooling is to quickly cool down and cause the steel to undergo a phase change.

The main differences between forging and quenching

1. Different processing processes: Forging is to hammer or press the metal to change its shape and properties, while quenching is to change the properties of the metal by rapid cooling.

2. Different scope of application: Forging is suitable for processing various metals, while quenching is mainly used for processing steel.

3. Different effects on material properties: Forging can increase the strength, hardness and toughness of the metal and improve the heat resistance and corrosion resistance of the metal; while quenching can improve the strength and hardness of steel.
