The core difference between lost foam casting and investment casting lies in the nature of the process:
lost foam casting uses a foam plastic pattern that vaporizes during pouring to form a mold cavity, while investment casting uses a wax pattern that is dewaxed to create a hollow shell for pouring.
Process Differences
Lost foam casting: A single pattern is made of foam plastic (such as EPS). After coating and sand molding, molten metal is poured under negative pressure. The pattern vaporizes and disappears, replacing the casting.
Investment casting: A pattern is first made of wax or plastic, then coated with multiple layers of refractory material to form a shell. After heating and dewaxing, a hollow mold is formed, into which molten metal is poured.
Technical Comparison
Precision and Surface Quality:
Investment casting offers higher precision (tolerance grades CT4-7) and lower surface roughness (Ra1.6-6.3μm), making it suitable for high-quality finishes.
Lost foam casting has a rougher surface and lower precision, but it eliminates the mold parting step, simplifying the process. Complexity and Cost:
Investment casting can produce extremely complex internal structures (such as turbine blades), but the process is complex, with long cycles and high costs, making small-batch production uneconomical.
Lost foam casting is suitable for medium-to-large complex parts and offers lower costs, but foam vaporization may lead to porosity defects.
Material Application:
Investment casting can produce high-melting-point alloys (such as high-temperature alloys and titanium alloys).
Lost foam casting is primarily used for low-melting-point materials such as cast iron and aluminum alloys, limiting its application to high-melting-point alloys.
Application Scenarios:
Investment casting specializes in high-precision, small-scale, complex parts, such as aircraft engine blades, medical devices, and jewelry.
Lost foam casting is suitable for mass production of medium-to-large parts, such as automotive engine blocks, valve housings, and machine tool components.
