The core differences between sand casting and investment casting lie in the mold material, precision, applicability, process complexity, and cost.
Sand casting uses sand molds, which offer lower precision but lower cost and greater adaptability, making it suitable for large castings. Investment casting (lost wax casting) uses wax patterns and refractory shells, offering higher precision and surface quality, but with a more complex process and higher cost, and is primarily used for small, complex, and precision parts.
Main Differences
Mold Material and Structure.
Sand Casting: Sand is the primary molding material and requires a parting surface, aided by a wooden or metal mold.
Investment Casting: A single, fusible material (such as wax) is used to create a mold shell. A refractory shell is then coated with the mold, which is then melted to produce a mold without a parting surface.
Precision and Surface Quality
Sand Casting: Low dimensional accuracy (IT14-IT12), a rough surface, and the need for subsequent processing.
Investment Casting: High dimensional accuracy (IT7-IT4 grade), smooth surface finish (roughness Ra 1.6-6.3μm), and minimal machining allowance.
Applicability and Limitations
Sand Casting: Capable of producing castings weighing from a few grams to hundreds of tons, suitable for large parts (such as engine blocks and crankshafts), but with low precision and challenging environmental conditions.
Investment Casting: Limited to small and medium-sized parts (generally less than 25kg), suitable for complex, thin-walled parts (such as turbine blades), but with high cost and low efficiency.
Process and Cost
Sand Casting: Simple process, short cycle time, low cost, suitable for mass production.
Investment Casting: Requires multiple steps, including wax pattern making, shell coating, and dewaxing, resulting in long cycle times, high costs, and difficulty in automation.
Application Scenarios
Sand Casting: Large or low-cost parts such as automotive engine components and machine tool bases. Investment Casting: Complex, high-precision parts such as aircraft blades and precision instrument components.
