What are the alternatives to lost-wax casting

Lost-wax casting (also known as investment casting) is a high-precision casting process suitable for complex-shaped metal parts,

but it is not the only option. According to publicly available information, the following processes can be considered alternatives, with specific applicability depending on product structure, batch size, material, and cost requirements:

Main Alternative Processes
Metal Injection Molding (MIM)
Suitable for small-sized, high-precision, high-volume production of complex metal parts, especially suitable for materials such as stainless steel and titanium alloys. However, MIM is limited in manufacturing large or thin-walled (<0.5mm) structures, where lost-wax casting is more advantageous.
Sand Casting
Low cost, suitable for large or single-piece production, but precision and surface finish are far lower than lost-wax casting. It is typically used for non-precision parts such as cast iron and cast steel.
Pressure Casting (Die Casting)
Suitable for mass production of low-melting-point metals such as zinc, aluminum, and magnesium alloys. High efficiency and good surface finish, but high mold costs make it unsuitable for high-melting-point alloys (such as titanium and high-temperature alloys).

Lost foam casting (EPC) uses a foam plastic model embedded in a sand mold; the model vaporizes and disappears during pouring. Suitable for large, complex parts, it eliminates the need for a parting line, but its dimensional accuracy and surface quality fall between sand casting and lost-wax casting.

3D printing direct metal forming (e.g., SLM/DMLS) can directly manufacture complex metal parts without a mold, suitable for small-batch, highly complex structures (such as aerospace components). However, it has high equipment costs and limited material choices, typically used for extreme designs that cannot be achieved with traditional casting.

Digital moldless casting directly manufactures sand molds through 3D printing or CNC cutting, eliminating the need for wooden/metal molds and shortening the development cycle by 50%–80%. Suitable for single-piece or small-batch complex castings.

Selection Recommendations: Small batches, high complexity, precious metals/high-temperature alloys → Lost-wax casting remains irreplaceable.

Large batches, small sizes, common alloys → MIM or die casting are preferred.

Large structures, low cost priority → Sand casting or lost foam casting is more economical.

Rapid prototyping or customization needs → 3D printing metal forming or digital moldless casting are emerging options.

Of course, apart from sand casting, other casting processes basically fall under the category of precision casting. In current industrial development, lost-wax casting remains a high-precision, cost-effective casting process.
