Common types of cracks in the forging process include end face cracking, folding cracking and tearing.
The causes and manifestations of these cracks are different, as follows:
End face cracking: This is a common cracking phenomenon in the forging process of titanium alloys, which usually occurs on the end face of the billet. The main reasons for end face cracking include the incomplete removal of shrinkage holes at the head of the ingot or the cold shut at the tail, the absorption of heat by the end face of the billet in contact with the hammer anvil during the upsetting process, and uneven deformation during the drawing process.
Folding cracking: There are three main situations of folding cracking: the height-to-diameter ratio of the raw material titanium alloy ingot is ≥2.5 or the sampling groove is left in the middle of the ingot, the deep pit is ground after cracking in the middle of the billet during the forging process, and the sharp protrusions and pits generated by other auxiliary processes are not ground and removed according to regulations.
Tearing: Tearing refers to a transverse cracking that is partially torn when the titanium alloy billet is stretched and deformed. The main reasons are that the single-pass pressing amount is too large or the pressing rate is too fast, the edge curvature is not smooth enough due to the deformation of the hammer anvil due to long-term use, and some stepped shaft bars have large differences in local dimensions due to misalignment.
These cracks not only affect the quality and performance of forgings, but also increase production costs and reduce production efficiency. Therefore, corresponding preventive measures need to be taken during the forging process, such as strict inspection of raw materials entering the warehouse, selection of appropriate cooling media and improvement of heat treatment processes to ensure the quality and production efficiency of forgings.
Of course, professional forging companies can completely avoid these crack problems, because professional forging processors will solve crack problems through process optimization, forging techniques and quality inspection to ensure that the products delivered to customers are flawless.
