What is 6061 aluminum cast

6061 cast aluminum is an aluminum alloy material produced by casting process with magnesium and silicon as the main alloying elements.

Its typical composition includes magnesium (0.8%-1.2%), silicon (0.4%-0.8%), and the balance is aluminum. The material is improved by heat treatment pre-stretching process, with medium strength, good corrosion resistance and weldability, suitable for industrial structural parts such as trams and railway vehicles.

Casting process characteristics

6061 cast aluminum is made by liquid molding process through smelting, pouring, cooling and solidification. This process can manufacture parts with complex shapes, but there may be defects such as pores and shrinkage inside, and the grain structure is relatively coarse.

Performance and application

Its mechanical properties are tensile strength of 124MPa, yield strength of 55.2MPa, elongation of 25%, and elastic modulus of 68.9GPa. Due to the characteristics of casting process, it is mainly used in parts with complex structures and not the highest absolute strength requirements, such as engine cylinders, complex housings and more.
