A flange is an indispensable component in the connection of pipes, valves, and equipment, primarily used for sealing, pressure bearing, and easy assembly/disassembly.
Its core functions include the following three points:
Connection Function: Enables detachable connections between pipes and between pipes and equipment, facilitating installation, inspection, and maintenance.
Sealing Function: Effectively prevents leakage of media (such as liquids and gases) within the pipeline by placing a gasket between two flanges and securing them with bolts.
Support and Stability: Provides a support surface for bolted connections, ensuring the strength and stability of the connection and enabling it to withstand the pressure of the pipeline system.
Common Types of Flanges
Depending on the application and pressure rating, flanges come in several types:
Slip-on Flange (PL): Low cost and easy installation, but with relatively low pressure bearing capacity; mostly used in low-pressure applications such as building construction and water supply/drainage.
Weld Neck Flange (WN): With a long neck transition, it has strong pressure bearing capacity and is suitable for high-pressure pipelines in industries such as petrochemicals and power generation.
Socket flanges: Pipes are inserted into the flange and welded inside; commonly used for small-diameter, low-pressure pipelines.
Threaded flanges: Connected to pipes via threads; suitable for applications where welding must be avoided, such as fire-fighting water systems.
Flange Materials and Standards: Flanges are made from a variety of materials, including carbon steel, stainless steel, and alloy steel, to meet the needs of different media (such as corrosive or high-temperature environments). Their production follows various international standards, such as ASME and DIN.
