What is a mold in sand casting

In sand casting, the mold primarily forms the structural shape of the casting and is typically composed of components such as a wooden mold and a core box.

Mold Function and Structure

The core function of the mold is to pre-create a cavity with the same dimensions as the casting, pouring molten metal into it and allowing it to cool and solidify. Its main components include:

Mold: Determines the final shape of the mold cavity and is typically made of wood or metal.
Core box: Used to create the sand core (a hollow interior structure) and hardened with a binder such as resin or water glass.
How it is used in the process
The mold is inserted into the sand mold to form a cavity corresponding to the shape of the casting. After pouring the molten metal, the mold is melted at high temperatures to maintain its structural stability. After cooling, the mold undergoes sand removal and cleaning to produce the casting blank.

Why are flask molds so common in casting? The main reasons are their flexibility and cost-effectiveness. Compared to specialized metal molds, flask molds are simple to manufacture and modify, making them suitable for small batches or prototypes. Sand molds offer excellent air permeability and yield, reducing casting defects such as pores and cracks. However, flask molds also have limitations, such as low precision and high surface roughness, making them unsuitable for parts requiring high precision.

In practice, the production of a flask mold involves multiple steps. The mold structure is designed based on the part drawing, and the parting surface and gating system are determined. Next, a mold prototype is made from a suitable material, such as wood or metal. Next, molding sand is filled around the mold and compacted to form the sand mold. The mold is removed, leaving a cavity, completing the sand mold. This entire process requires experience and skill to ensure the quality of the final casting.

Of course, the sand casting process is highly mature, but it is designed for specific applications. It is widely used in large-scale pump casings and housings.
