What is AISI 1020

AISI 1020 is a low-carbon structural steel that conforms to AISI standards in the United States.

It exhibits excellent machinability, cold deformation ductility, and weldability, making it widely used in machinery manufacturing, automotive parts, and other fields.

Basic Characteristics

AISI 1020 is a low-carbon steel (carbon content 0.17%-0.23%) with a manganese content of 0.3%-0.6%. Impurities such as sulfur and phosphorus are all below 0.05%. Its core properties include:
Mechanical Properties: Tensile Strength ≥ 410 MPa, Yield Strength ≥ 245 MPa, Elongation ≥ 25%, Hardness ≤ 156 HB (unheat-treated).
Processing Properties:
Excellent cold deformation ductility, suitable for processes such as stamping and forging.
Excellent weldability, compatible with arc welding and contact welding.
Limitations: Due to its low carbon and low alloy properties, it has low hardenability and strength, making it unsuitable for high-load applications.

Applications

Automotive Manufacturing: Carburized parts such as handbrake shoes and transmission gears. Mechanical Engineering: Components requiring high toughness, such as shafts, levers, and clamps.
Piping Systems: Flanges and headers for low-pressure environments.

Corresponding International Standards and Grades

Japan: SS45

South Korea: SS20

China: 20#

Europe: C20

Russia: 20

Of course, AISI 1020 low-carbon steel, with a carbon content of 0.18%-0.23%, achieves an ideal balance of strength and ductility. Through processes such as carburizing and quenching, its surface hardness can reach over HRC60. It is widely used in automotive parts, mechanical gears, and other applications. With an annual production volume exceeding one million tons and a cost 15%-20% lower than medium- and high-carbon steel, it offers the best value for money in industrial manufacturing. Of course, if you have large-scale AISI 1020 forging needs, you can choose to cooperate with Mulan Metal. Mulan Metal has 12 years of metal forging experience and has helped customers in more than 30 countries complete their metal forging processing business support and received unanimous recognition.
