AISI 420 is a high-carbon martensitic stainless steel with excellent hardness, wear resistance, and moderate corrosion resistance.
It is widely used in the manufacture of cutting tools, medical devices, and mechanical parts.
Material Properties and Chemical Composition
AISI 420 is a martensitic stainless steel specified by the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) standard. Its chemical composition includes carbon (0.15%-0.40%), chromium (12%-14%), and trace amounts of manganese and silicon. The high carbon content allows for significant hardness increases through heat treatment (quenching and tempering), reaching values exceeding HRC 50.
Core Performance Advantages
High Hardness and Wear Resistance: After heat treatment, the hardness reaches tool steel levels, making it suitable for manufacturing wear-resistant components such as cutting tools and bearings.
Moderate Corrosion Resistance: Chromium forms a chromium oxide film, allowing for use in humid or slightly acidic environments, but its corrosion resistance is lower than that of high-chromium stainless steels such as AISI 440.
Processing Performance: It is easy to machine in the annealed state and exhibits a high surface finish after polishing. Main Application Areas
Knives and Medical Devices: Precision tools requiring high hardness, such as scalpels and scissors;
Industrial Components: Bearings, valves, molds, and automotive parts.
