Cr12MoV is a high-carbon, high-chromium cold work die steel with excellent hardenability, wear resistance, and toughness.
It is widely used in the manufacture of cold stamping dies and tools with large cross-sections and complex shapes.
Material Definition and Characteristics
Cr12MoV is an alloy tool steel. Its international equivalents include China’s GB standard Cr12MoV, Germany’s DIN standard X165CrMoV12, and Japan’s JIS standard SKD11. Its core characteristics include:
High hardenability: Workpieces with cross-sections of less than 300-400mm can be fully hardened.
High wear resistance: Wear resistance is 3-4 times higher than that of ordinary low-alloy tool steels.
Excellent toughness: Compared to Cr12 steel, it exhibits less quenching distortion and greater impact resistance.
Chemical Composition
The chemical composition of Cr12MoV is as follows (by weight):
Carbon (C): 1.45%-1.70%.
Chromium (Cr): 11.00%-12.50%. Molybdenum (Mo): 0.40%-0.60%.
Vanadium (V): 0.15%-0.30%.
Silicon (Si) and manganese (Mn): ≤ 0.40%. Sulfur (S) and phosphorus (P): ≤ 0.030%.
Applications
Mainly used for manufacturing high-load cold working dies, such as:
Cold stamping dies, such as punching dies, trimming dies, and thread rolling dies.
Steel plate deep drawing dies and cold extrusion dies.
High-precision components, such as gauges and standard tools.
