Electrical discharge machining (EDM) is a special processing technology that uses electric spark discharge to remove conductive materials through electroerosion.
It also belongs to the category of machining. The following are its core features and applications:
Principles and features
Processing principle
The pulse discharge between the tool electrode and the workpiece generates high temperature (up to 10,000°C or more), locally melts or vaporizes the workpiece material, and achieves material removal. The entire process is immersed in a dielectric fluid (such as kerosene) to cool and flush away the eroded particles.
Non-contact processing
The tool and the workpiece have no direct mechanical contact, which can avoid stress deformation in traditional cutting and is suitable for processing thin walls, fine structures or brittle materials.
High precision and complex shapes
The tolerance can reach ±0.005 mm, and it can manufacture complex cavities, deep holes, narrow slits and other features that are difficult to achieve with traditional processes.
Application areas
Mold manufacturing: Processing precision cavities and contours of materials such as hardened steel and cemented carbide.
Aerospace: Manufacturing fine structures such as cooling holes on engine turbine blades.
Medical devices: Production of high-precision micro parts.
Advantages and Disadvantages
Advantages:
High-strength, high-hardness conductive materials (such as titanium alloys, tool steels) can be processed.
No mechanical stress on the surface, suitable for precision parts.
Disadvantages:
Conductive materials only.
Processing efficiency is lower than traditional cutting.
Supporting equipment and technology
Typical EDM machines include pulse power supplies and automatic gap adjustment devices, and high-precision control is achieved through CNC technology. Modern processes are often combined with high-speed milling to improve electrode manufacturing efficiency and processing accuracy.
Of course, point processing also belongs to the category of machining, which helps processing plants solve the problem of metal parts manufacturing.
