Hastelloy C276 (UNS N10276) is a nickel-chromium-molybdenum-tungsten nickel-based alloy designed for extremely corrosive environments.
Typical applications include:
Chemical and petrochemical industries: reactors, evaporators, heat exchangers, piping, and pumps, especially for media containing chlorides, wet chlorine, hypochlorite, formic acid/acetic acid, concentrated sulfuric acid, or mixed acids;
Flue gas desulfurization (FGD) systems: scrubbing tower linings, spray pipes, baffles, and flues, resistant to high concentrations of chlorine/sulfuric acid mixtures (e.g., coal-fired power plants, ship exhaust desulfurization);
Pulp and paper industries: digesters, bleaching towers, and recovery equipment, resistant to chlorine-containing bleaching solutions (e.g., chlorine dioxide, hypochlorous acid). Salt); Environmental Protection and Waste Treatment: Waste incineration flue gas purification systems, wastewater treatment equipment, capable of handling mixed acid mists containing HCl, HF, and SO₂; Marine and Seawater Engineering: Seawater desalination plants, seawater pipelines and valves, resistant to pitting and crevice corrosion (including alternating wet and dry areas); Pharmaceuticals and Semiconductors: High-purity chemical delivery systems, reaction vessels, compatible with various solvents and alternating acid-base cleaning environments;
Its core advantage lies in its simultaneous resistance to oxidizing and reducing corrosion. It is one of the few materials that can serve for extended periods in harsh media such as humid chlorine, ferric chloride/copper chloride solutions, and hot concentrated sulfuric acid, earning it the reputation of a “universal corrosion-resistant alloy.” However, due to its high cost (approximately 8–12 times that of 316L stainless steel), it is typically used only for critical contact components, often in the form of linings or composite structures.
