What is OEM casting

OEM casting refers to a model where a foundry custom-produces metal castings based on detailed drawings, specifications, and technical requirements provided by the brand owner or customer.

In this model, the foundry acts as the Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM), responsible for producing according to the customer’s design. The final product bears the customer’s trademark, not the foundry’s own brand.

Its core characteristics include:

Customized production: The casting process is entirely executed according to the technical documents provided by the customer, covering specific requirements such as material type (e.g., iron, steel, aluminum), dimensional tolerances, and surface treatment.

Cost sensitivity: The price of OEM castings is easily affected by fluctuations in raw material costs (e.g., pig iron) and exchange rates. For example, when the price of pig iron fluctuates by 300 RMB/ton or the exchange rate changes by more than 3%, both parties may need to renegotiate the price.

Wide application: Commonly used in the automotive, machinery, and aerospace industries, especially in China, where many foundries provide OEM services to overseas companies to meet the customization needs of the global market.

The difference between OEM casting and ordinary casting is that OEM casting emphasizes brand ownership and contractual constraints. The foundry acts only as a processor and does not participate in the product design or sales process.

What is OEM casting

OEM VS ODM VS OBM?

OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturing), also known as “private label manufacturing” or “contract manufacturing,” is a special form of contractual arrangement.

It refers to a production contract where the client uses their core expertise to design products, establish product specifications and standards, and even specify the raw materials or components for production. The contract manufacturer produces the products according to the client’s standards and requirements, and then sells them under the client’s brand.

In this process, the company that produces products according to the client’s standards and requirements is called the OEM company or “contract manufacturer.” ODM (Original Design Manufacturer)… Original Design Manufacturing (ODM) is a special form of contractual arrangement where a client leverages its core expertise, particularly its unique advantages in branding and distribution channels, to outsource some or all of the product design activities to a contract manufacturer. The contract manufacturer then designs and produces the precise product according to the client’s requirements, which is then sold under the client’s brand.

Of course, ODM is an upgraded version of OEM. In this process, the company responsible for some or all of the product design and production is called an ODM company.

Compared to OEM companies, ODM companies also undertake some or all of the product design, occupying both the product design and manufacturing links in the value chain. Therefore, ODM companies typically have better profit margins than OEM companies.

OBM (Own Brand) OBM (Original Brand Manufacturing) refers to a product manufacturing company that, in addition to producing goods, creates its own brand and competes in the market through its own established channels.

Compared to the previous two types of companies, OBM companies, besides manufacturing products, are also responsible for research and development and sales, occupying a crucial link in the value chain and thus achieving high profit margins. OBM is an upgraded version of ODM (Original Design Manufacturing). Under the OBM model, manufacturers have transformed from simply manufacturing to managing their own brands. They no longer simply produce according to the client’s requirements but need to create, build, and operate their own brands.
