What is the difference between hot and cold chamber die casting

Hot chamber die casting and cold chamber die casting are two mainstream die casting methods, each with unique advantages and applications.

The core differences lie in their structural design and applicable scenarios:

Structural Differences

In a hot chamber die casting machine, the melting furnace is directly connected to the shot chamber, allowing the molten metal to be directly injected through a gooseneck while being kept warm. Cold chamber die casting machines, on the other hand, utilize a separate melting furnace, requiring the molten metal to be ladled into the shot chamber before die casting.

Applicable Metal Types

Hot chamber die casting is suitable for low-melting-point metals (such as zinc alloys, which typically melt below 450°C), while cold chamber die casting can process high-melting-point metals (such as aluminum and magnesium alloys).

Injection Pressure

Cold chamber die casting uses higher injection pressures (typically 900-1200 bar) and is suitable for aluminum with higher viscosity. Hot chamber die casting uses relatively lower pressures and is suitable for low-melting-point metals with better fluidity.

Production Efficiency

Hot chamber die casting has a faster cycle (up to 12 die-casting cycles per minute) and is suitable for mass production of small, precision parts (such as electronic component housings). Cold chamber die casting, due to the additional melting step, has a longer production cycle, but is suitable for large, complex parts (such as automotive engine brackets).

Level of Automation

Hot chamber die casting offers better continuity and consumes approximately 30% less energy per pass than cold chamber die casting. Cold chamber die casting requires separate melting equipment, which consumes more energy but can withstand greater heat loads.

Of course, different processes operate in different scenarios. Hot chamber die casting is commonly used in the manufacture of parts for industries like automotive machinery, while cold chamber die casting is primarily used in the manufacture of high-strength aerospace components.
