The minimum wall thickness for aluminum sand casting is typically 3 mm or more.
Specifically, due to the limited metal flow capacity of the sand casting process, it is difficult to meet the requirements for extremely thin wall thicknesses. For aluminum alloy castings, the minimum wall thickness for conventional sand casting is generally recommended to be in the range of 3-4 mm. If the wall thickness is less than 3 mm (e.g., 0.6-0.8 mm), it cannot be achieved through sand casting and requires processes such as die casting.
How to control the wall thickness in aluminum sand casting?
Controlling the wall thickness in aluminum sand casting is crucial for ensuring casting quality, and the core lies in balancing process feasibility with performance requirements. Based on the characteristics of sand casting, the minimum wall thickness of aluminum alloy castings is usually not less than 3 mm to avoid defects such as incomplete filling and cold shuts. In actual production, the wall thickness tolerance (i.e., the allowable thickness deviation) varies depending on the casting process. For example, the wall thickness tolerance for gravity casting is generally between ±0.5 mm and ±1 mm, while low-pressure casting can achieve more precise control, reaching ±0.2 mm to ±0.5 mm.
During design, the principle of “uniform wall thickness” should be followed, avoiding localized excessive thickness that can lead to shrinkage cavities, porosity, or stress cracks due to uneven cooling. The inner wall thickness is recommended to be approximately 80% of the outer wall thickness, and the thickness of ribs should be even smaller to promote simultaneous solidification. Furthermore, each aluminum alloy has a critical wall thickness (usually 3 times the minimum wall thickness), beyond which the casting strength will decrease. Therefore, scientific material selection is necessary rather than simply increasing the thickness.
In summary, reasonable wall thickness design requires comprehensive consideration of alloy characteristics, casting size, and structure, achieving a balance between quality and cost through process optimization.
