The minimum wall thickness of cast iron varies depending on the casting process and material, generally ranging from 2 to 4.9 mm:
Conventional iron castings
For sand casting, the minimum wall thickness is typically 2 to 3 mm, which meets general mechanical strength requirements.
For metal mold casting (such as die casting), the minimum wall thickness can be as low as 2.5 mm, but this needs to be adjusted based on specific process parameters.
Special Scenarios
When cast iron sleeves are used as additional components, the wall thickness should not be less than 2 mm to meet the casting process and basic strength requirements.
Ductile iron pipes comply with ISO 2531, with a minimum wall thickness of 4.9 mm (corresponding to an outer diameter of 200 mm).
Different casting processes and product standards have specific requirements for wall thickness, and the selection should be based on actual production conditions.
Does the wall thickness of cast iron affect its mechanical properties?
The wall thickness of cast iron significantly affects its mechanical properties, as shown below:
1. Cooling Rate and Microstructure
Increasing wall thickness reduces cooling rate, leading to coarsening of grains, increased dendrite arm spacing, and exacerbated shrinkage defects, thus reducing the material’s density and continuity. For example, increasing the wall thickness of gray cast iron from 2.5mm to 125mm can result in a 25%-30% decrease in tensile strength.
2. Changes in Mechanical Properties
Strength and Toughness: Thick-walled castings experience a decrease in tensile strength, hardness, and other properties due to microstructure porosity (e.g., shrinkage cavities and porosity) and graphite coarsening.
Anisotropy: Uneven wall thickness can easily lead to stress concentration, causing deformation or cracking.
3. Process and Design Balance
Minimum Wall Thickness: Sand-cast gray cast iron typically requires a wall thickness of ≥2-3mm to avoid under-casting and cold shuts.
Optimization Options: Technologies such as 3D printing sand molds can improve internal defects and enhance the strength of thick-walled parts. The wall thickness of cast iron must balance process feasibility and performance requirements. Excessively thick or thin walls will negatively impact mechanical properties.
