What Material is Used for Forged Crankshafts

Currently, forged crankshafts are primarily made of medium-carbon steel or medium-carbon alloy steel, such as 45 steel, 53 steel, 35CrMo, and 40Cr.

These materials undergo tempering or normalizing heat treatment to enhance their strength and processability, making them suitable for high-power, high-load engines.

Common Material Properties

Medium-carbon steel: With a carbon content of 0.25%-0.60%, it offers both strength and toughness, making it suitable for medium- and low-power engines.
Alloy steel: Adding elements such as Cr and Mo enhances wear and deformation resistance, making it suitable for heavy-duty diesel engines.
Tempering and Tempering: Heat treatment optimizes the microstructure, further enhancing the crankshaft’s fatigue strength and impact resistance.

Cost and Process

The forging process is complex and energy-intensive, with material costs approximately 4-5 times that of ductile iron. Therefore, it is often used in applications requiring extremely high performance. Of course, if you have large-scale crankshaft forging needs, you can choose to cooperate with Mulan Metal. Mulan Metal has 12 years of forging processing experience and has helped customers in more than 30 countries complete forging processing business and has received unanimous recognition. We look forward to your cooperation consultation.
