What metal is best for cold forging

The most suitable metal materials for cold forging include high alloy tool steel and cemented carbide, which perform well in the cold forging process and can meet the requirements of high hardness, high wear resistance and good toughness.

High alloy tool steel

After proper heat treatment, the hardness of high alloy tool steel can reach a very high level, which can withstand the huge pressure in the cold forging process, ensure that the mold will not be easily deformed during repeated use, thereby ensuring the dimensional accuracy and surface quality of the cold forged parts. In addition, high alloy tool steel has good wear resistance and can maintain a long service life during friction with the workpiece.

Cemented carbide

Cemented carbide has extremely high wear resistance and is particularly suitable for cold forging dies with extremely high wear resistance requirements. Cemented carbide can resist severe wear during cold forging, extend the service life of the mold, reduce the frequency of replacement, and thus reduce production costs.

Carbon steel

Carbon steel is a steel with a high carbon content. The reason why it is suitable for cold forging is that it has high strength and hardness and can maintain a stable shape. In the cold forging process, carbon steel is not easy to sinter, crack or deform, so it is widely used.

Stainless steel

Stainless steel is a kind of steel with good corrosion resistance and is suitable for use in harsh environments. Due to its high hardness and strength, it is also widely used in cold forging.

Process flow of cold forging

Cold forging is a cold processing method, which is mainly divided into the following steps.

1. Cut the metal material of the selected length;

2. Heat to the appropriate temperature and keep it for a long time to make the temperature uniform;

3. Cool to a suitable temperature for cold forging;

4. Place the metal material on the cold forging machine and perform cold forging through different cold forging mechanisms;

5. Perform heat treatment and subsequent processing as needed.

Other related factors

In addition to hardness and wear resistance, cold forging die steel also needs to have good toughness. Although cold forging is carried out at a lower temperature, the die will be subjected to various complex stresses during operation. If the steel lacks toughness, cracks and other problems are prone to occur, affecting the continuity of production. Therefore, cold forging die steel needs to have a certain toughness while ensuring hardness and wear resistance to adapt to different working conditions.
