The typical temperature range for forging 316 stainless steel is 925–1260°C (1700–2300°F).
The initial forging temperature is generally recommended to be 1150–1200°C, and the final forging temperature should not be lower than 925°C (approximately 1700°F).
Initial forging temperature: 1150–1200°C (to ensure good plasticity and avoid chromium depletion at grain boundaries)
Final forging temperature: ≥925°C (below this temperature, cracking and decreased plasticity are likely)
Forging below 925°C (1700°F) is prohibited, as it will lead to work hardening or cracking.
316 is an austenitic stainless steel and cannot be strengthened by heat treatment. After forging, it needs to be air-cooled and usually solution annealed (1010–1120°C) to restore corrosion resistance. The actual temperature should be fine-tuned based on the workpiece size, deformation amount, and equipment conditions. The dwell time at high temperatures should not be too long to prevent grain coarsening or oxidation.
